Thanks to Jonathan Romero and team nearly 75 boats participated in the 5th annual Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge and Dinghy Distance Race. Despite capsizing while beating back up wind, Peter Patnaude won the Tyler Patnaude Memorial Award. Peter has particpated 4 consecutive years. Tyler won this event during their first year participating together, also a race in which Peter capsized!
RICHMOND, Va – Yvonne Patnaude shared a preview of the inaugural Boats and Bowties Memorial Regatta & Gala, in honor of her son, Tyler, who passed away in April 2014. The event will include dinner, music, live and silent auctions, and more to raise funds for the Tyler Patnaude Foundation, which will partner with the United Network for Organ Sharing. The event is Saturday, July 25th with the Regatta at Greater Richmond Sailing Association from 12pm to 3pm and the Gala from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at Celebrations at the Reservoir, located at 4801 Woolridge Road.
Robert Suhay set a world record in distance sailing in 2014 and beat it in 2015 by sailing 346.1 NM in the Atlantic Ocean on a 14 foot boat. Tylers bracelet made the trip also.
"I told his parents I would carry it with me on my attempt this time," he said. "I really think it's important that I find some way to let them know that he, Tyler, was with me all the way.
